On Friday, 20th September the 2013 County Durham Sports and Physical Activity Awards were held at the Spennymoor Leisure Centre attended by sports groups, schools and colleges from the area.
Athena Sports Academy based in Newton Aycliffe and Shildon Leisure Centres were nominated for several major awards and left feeling well and truly proud. One of the founding members of Athena, coach Samantha Robson, came away with ‘Coach of the Year’ (Sedgefield Area), which is a great achievement not only for Sam but for the group.
Athena were also Awarded Junior Sports Club of the Year (Sedgefield Area). This is a great achievement for the Academy ,not only receiving these awards, but for the success that the Gymnasts have also had in the first 2 years of it’s life.
This summer saw the Academy win gold and bronze at the NDP’s in Stoke National Competitions where the gymnasts were up against the best from the country, as well as winning over 50 medals at a Gymnastics Competition in Durham.
It is a very busy time for Coaches and Gymnasts at Athena as they are currently preparing two routines for Gymfusion 2013 in Newcastle in November. One of the routines being put together is for Disabled Gymnasts. This together with another Gymnastics Competion, and their annual Christmas Showcase in the Leisure Centre in December, it adds up to a very busy ending to 2013.
If anyone is interested in Gymnastics, the Academy offers Recreation Classes from 3 years and above at both Leisure Centres, as well as classes in acrobatic gymnastics and tumbling. Telephone Sam on 07800 847527 for further information.
