The year 8 football team at Greenfield Community College have made a fantastic start to the season over the last few months. Having been unbeaten in the league winning 5 and drawing 1 and taking the 8-a-side trophy the boys turned their attention to the ESFA (England Schools Football Association) Small Schools Trophy.
The talented squad recently made it to the last 32 of this prestigious competition. Last week the boys travelled to Morpeth to face Newminster Middle School in the 3rd round beating them 4-2 and earning a place amongst the last 32 schools in the country.
The game witnessed many exceptional performances, namely Josh Mellanby, Adam Scott and Adam Lamb helping them to progress even though they were missing a couple of key players.
This meant that the boys were handed another away tie in the 4th round, this time in Carlisle to compete against Richard Rose Central Academy, who are a regular at this stage and beyond of the competition. Having made the long trip the boys started brightly and the first half was very tense with both teams keen to cancel each other out.
Nonetheless Adam Scott went close for Greenfield just before the break. The home side took the lead half way through the second half and had much the better thereafter. Harry Hobbs and Niall Blenkinsop forced their keeper into two instinctive saves just before the final whistle went.
However it wasn’t to be and the boys ended up losing 1-0. The year 8 football team have done incredibly well to reach this stage and will look to improve upon this success in next year’s competition.
The boys will now concentrate on league and cup duties in the Bishop Auckland Schools Football Association when the second half of the season continues after the February half-term having made an excellent start in the first few months.
