Two student “Engineheads” represented Greenfield Community College, Green-field Arts and Room 13, alongside Katy Milne at the international SSAT Conference in Manchester last week.
Millie Tezcan-Fotoohi and Jasmine Falconer were invited to lead a SOLE session alongside colleagues from George Stephenson in Newcastle and join Professor Sugata Mitra for his keynote speech at the conference celebrating the learner.
As part of the keynote the students discussed what is SOLE, why it works, and how the role of the teacher and student can shift. They talked about how SOLE helps you to explore information in a broader way through your own curiosity; enabling you to learn what you want to learn.
Millie and Jasmine are part of the Engineheads, a group of enthusiastic students who support the work of Room 13, one of seven schools in the Cloud labs, developed as part of Professor Sugata Mitra’s TED Prize. Room 13 opened in February 2014 and has provided the opportunity for staff and students at Greenfield, as well as colleagues from across the world, to explore SOLE “Self Organised Learning Environment.”
This involves students being asked a big question, working in groups of 5 or 6 around computers, organising themselves in regards to who they work alongside, how they work and what they learn.
The students were a credit to Greenfield at the conference – speaking confidently and intelligently about the space and the research –well done!
