Students at Greenfield Community College are making the most of their lunch times and have joined a thriving Chess Club. The club allows them to pit their wits against other students, whilst learning new skills and tactics. Friendly competition is very evident amongst this growing number of participants.
A six round ‘swiss’ tournament was completed at the end of last term and was won by Joel Wraith from Year 11 with 5 points, followed closely by Kyle Phillips and Aaron Kilpatrick (4.5 points). After the success of the tournament the students were faced with a new challenge – their teachers! Greenfield staff put together an 8-strong team to beat pupils by 6-2 in an exciting match over lunch time!
This is just one of the thriving extra-curricular clubs at Greenfield, offering students the opportunity to try new activities and learn new skills.
The club will continue after Easter, with matches against other schools planned in the near future.
You never know we may have the next Magnus Carlsen in our midst!
