On Thursday 4th July Greenfield Community College held its annual Sports Presentation Evening. It was fantastic to see so many parents and families at school to support and celebrate the success of a school hall full of inspirational students.
The pupils were joined by Michael Barron, an ex-professional football player for Middlesbrough and Hartlepool, who enjoyed a career that spanned over 12 years and over 300 league appearances. Since retiring in 2008 he has taken up a role of management for Hartlepool before leaving this position in 2013. In addition, Geoff Sheldon, the County Durham PE Inspector was also in attendance, who alongside Michael presented the awards to the successful students. The school would like to thank both for their inspiring and motivational words.
All pupils who attended received a certificate to celebrate their achievement in the vast array of extra-curricular clubs that Greenfield offer throughout the year. The sports included: football, netball, rugby, athletics, cricket , tennis, badminton, table tennis, x-country, dodgeball, rowing, basketball, indoor athletics, girls football, rounders, trampolining, gymnastics, sports leadership, boccia and handball.
The evening encapsulated a whole year of sporting success at Greenfield which inspired by the Olympics last summer has seen PE and Sport thrive within the school. The first half of the ceremony presented opportunity to celebrate winners for personality, commitment, most improved, team of the year, sports leaders and a special award. At the midway point of the evening a range of pupils were invited up onto stage for the annual infamous entertainment round. This year saw the students take part in a numeracy in PE quiz involving a series of maths challenges related to a sporting context. At the end of the evening the two most prestigious awards were presented for Outstanding Performance in School Sport with Courtnie Mills winning the accolade for the Girls for the second year running and Sam Dawson for the boys.
The evening was drawn to a close with a series of questions by the pupils for our special guest, Michael Barron. Congratulations to all pupils who have represented the school this last year. You have done yourself and your families proud.
