On Friday 20th March 2015 Ruby Watson, age 10, represented Aycliffe Village Primary School and Sedgefield District at the Sainsbury’s School Games County Final Gymnastics Competition, gaining 1st place and bringing home a gold medal and commemorative plaque.
The competition was held at South Durham Gymnastics Club in Spennymoor, with Ruby taking part in the Open Section, for gymnasts who train more than 2 hours per week. Gymnasts in this section competed as individuals rather than in teams.
Competition was stiff with competitors from some of the region’s top clubs such as Deerness, Athena and South Durham with a very high standard.
Gymnasts had to perform a floor routine containing set elements, and a vault. Scores were combined and Ruby scored a huge 19.10 out of 20, with an almost faultless floor routine and a solid landing on vault. All the children and teachers at Aycliffe Village Primary School are really proud of Ruby’s achievement.
