People who haven’t ridden a bike for a while are being encouraged to get back in the saddle with free Back on your Bike courses.

The courses offer cycling advice and basic maintenance demonstrations, in turn this will build the participants’ confidence to ride the bike, progressing from cycling in a quiet traffic free environment, to eventually cycling on quiet roads.

Bikes and helmets can be provided free of charge, so people who don’t own a bike can also get involved.

The next Back on your Bike courses are taking place at Chester-le-Street and Murton on the following dates, and places must be pre-booked:

• Friday 10 August, 9.30am – 3.00pm, at Riverside Sports Pavilion, Chester-le-Street

• Thursday 16 August, 10am – 12noon, at the Glebe Centre, Murton. (4 week course)

Stephen Clough, Physical Activity Officer said “The thought of starting to cycle can be a bit daunting for some people, so these sessions are a great place to try it out to see if it’s for you, and to start to build your confidence. Regular cycling has a number of health benefits, including helping you lose weight, build muscle and reduce stress, so the sessions are a good form of exercise, but they’re also the perfect excuse to get out in the fresh air and meet new people. You don’t even need any equipment to join in as it’s all provided.”

The courses are suitable for ages 16 and over, and anyone wanting more information, or to book a place can email Sportandleisure@durham.gov.uk or call 03000 266 555.

For those with a little more cycling experience, but who want to cycle with others, free weekly cycle rides are also held across County Durham. Details and booking information can be found by visiting www.durham.gov.uk/cycling
