An enthusiastic group of co-workers at a Newton Aycliffe-based charity are getting in their stride, ready for a parkrun challenge next month.
The Couch 2 5k Group at DISC, has been organised to encourage more people in the charity to enjoy the benefits of regular exercise, with a tempting target of completing the 5k parkrun on Saturday 27th August at Hardwick Park in Sedgefield.
Melissa Thornton, Finance Team Leader at DISC whose headquarters are next to the Newton Press office on Horndale Avenue, said: “I’m delighted at the number of colleagues that have joined the Club.
“It’s not just about fitness. It’s also about the other positive benefits of exercise, helping to make people happier, maintaining weight loss, boosting confidence and self-esteem as well as reducing stress and depression.”
Melissa recently passed a Leadership in Running Course held by England Athletics. Now she is using her new qualification to ensure all members of the running club receive the best possible advice.
The group is aimed at beginners and those who are not runners with the only entry requirement being the desire to get fit.
The number of DISC staff joining the running club has continued to increase as the countdown to their parkrun challenge continues, with each new member being encouraged to enjoy the camaraderie and health benefits that running can bring. The parkrun is free and open to all.
