Families across the region have benefited from free trampoline lessons this summer at local charity North East Autism Society site in Newton Aycliffe. This was made possible from the Benfield Motors CharitableTrust who donated £1000 towards the sessions.
The charity recognise it is often difficult for families of children with autism and additional needs to access services during the summer holidays. Theresa Arrowsmith, Co-ordinator explains: “Families use the summer to meet new people and enjoy new experiences, but many children and young people with autism rely heavily on a routine and the change can be disorientating. Some children and young people find coping without their normal routine frightening and upsetting. We focus on adding structure to the holiday, building up a routine so the whole family can relax and enjoy the break. In providing the right safe environment, we can use the experience to support the young people to be included within society.”
The trampoline sessions have been open to children and young people with special needs and have been a fantastic resource for families over the summer holidays. The charity hope to run the sessions again in the autumn. For more information about North East Autism Society, visit www.ne-as.org.uk or call 0191 410 9974.
