Former Greenfield student Owain Jones returned to school last week to talk about his life in the Royal Navy. Owain left school in 2012 and is now training as a Marine Engineer.
During his visit he talked confidently and passionately to over 60 students from all year groups about his life in the Navy – describing the tough physical training, the importance of having a goal and then working for it, and the satisfaction from pushing yourself a bit further to succeed.
He talked about his life and described a typical day from the 6 a.m. start through boot polishing to working on the engines and then the sporting opportunities. After his talk to students Owain answered individual questions about the best route for students into the forces depending on what are they want to specialise in.
All of his teachers were delighted to see him and everyone commented on how smart he looked in his uniform.
Owain enjoyed his time at Greenfield and was keen to return and catch up with his teachers and described his visit as ‘great experience for me’ and said ‘seeing you all was amazing because you were all a big part of my life’.
He has promised to return next time on leave to work with the PE department running circuit training and sharing some of his new skills and training.

As a student he showed the determination and resilience needed for the academic success so that he could fulfil his ambition of joining the Royal Navy. Owain epitomises what is possible with a positive approach and sheer hard work, we are very proud of him’.
