Cllr Arun Chandran was first elected to the Great Aycliffe Town Council in 1983 at the age of 24.
A legendary councillor, in July 1983 he proposed the Senior Citizens bus trips to replace the Holidays previously provided, in order to cater for all pensioners in Great Aycliffe, instead of just a few lucky ones. That was in 1984.
Arun missed out last year by one month, but being 61 in a months time, he went on his first OAP Council Trip (Whitby & Scarborough) last Monday: “it was a great day out” he said, “the weather was excellent, the Coach Driver and Council Volunteer first rate; food excellent and above all the people on the trip were absolutely delightfully great company. It was well worth the 35 year wait!” said Arun.
