The Rotary Christmas Community Concert on Tuesday 12th December was a talent-filled and very enjoyable celebration of Christmas with performances by students and members of the community of all ages across the area.

These included an accomplished gymnastics and dancing displays by Woodham and Greenfield with a medley from the town’s “Mad” Choir. We were also treated to a performance by popular ‘X Factor’ Singer Shanaya. A highlight of the whole event, for the children was Santa’s visit whose appearance lit up the faces of all children present.

The band of talented young instrumentalists brought together from schools in the town were brilliant.

The Rotary Club was delighted to see so many parents, grandparents, friends and other relatives and local people come along to support the youngsters, who performed with great enthusiasm and confidence before such a large audience.

“Our thanks go to everyone who was involved in making this annual event such a great success, including the teachers who gave their time to prepare their pupils at what is a very busy time of year and brought them along on the day – they should be very proud of them.

We would also like to thank the Mayor, Wendy Hillary, and her consort, Jed Hillary, for supporting the event” said Rotarian Trish Pemberton Community Service Chairman.

Rev. Mike Dixon acting as compere said: My thanks to all that came and especially the schools and the teachers who were able to showcase the hard work they do throughout the year. It was a grand occasion when the whole town came together to join in Christmas Celebrations”.

Admission was free but a total of £195.00 was raised from a collection and raffle to support local charities.

The Primary Schools who took part were: Vane Road, Woodham Burn, Byerley Park, Aycliffe Village, Horndale and Sugar Hill. Senior students were represented by Woodham Academy and Greenfield College.

Photos taken by Rotarian John Wilson show the variety of performances and the enthusiasm of the children and audience.

This event is very special in the town’s Christmas calendar and has been organised by the town’s Rotary Club, free of charge for 30 years.

This is part of the club’s Christmas activities which also includes a collection in Tesco’s and a Santa tour of streets in the town in aid of providing hampers for Aycliffe’s families in need.

The Rotary Club are to be commended for their hard work and valuable community service.
