Family Learning Days are a firmly established part of life at Woodham Academy. At the event on Saturday 16th March, children from primary schools across Aycliffe converged on the school with mums, dads, brothers and sisters.
Based on the theme of “Learning is Fun”, the event ran on the lines of a masterclass with workshops in Digital Literacy, Mathematics and Dance.
By 10.45 a.m., the college was buzzing with activity as workshops got under way. Miss Mulhearn hosted The Crystal Maze, a mathematical version of the television game show which had families pitting their wits against one another to crack the calculations.
In the Digital Literacy workshops with Mr. Smith, families had great fun using Pivot Animator to create stick figure animations. The idea was to think of a story, design and create individual frames, and then watch their works of art in action!
Meanwhile, in Dance Central with Mr. Tait, parents and children danced together in front of the big screen learning the moves from four of the biggest dance songs in the last couple of years.
Each 45 minute workshop ran twice catering for up to 15 participants, with well-deserved refreshments at changeover time. At the end of the morning everyone had the opportunity to sample a Woodham Academy light lunch.
The event was voted a huge success by those attending, in the words of one parent “It’s been excellent and couldn’t have been better!”
