Reading is always very high profile on Sugar Hill Primary School’s agenda. So much so that a competition has been launched across school called, ‘Extreme Reading’. Holly Neale in Class 6, with the support of her mam, has had a very special visit at school. Holly explained to Mrs Legge Deputy Head that, ‘Extreme reading is when you read in a silly place!’ Holly’s mam thought long and hard about where Holly could read to make it so EXTREME!
On Wednesday 2nd March 2022 PCSO Alfie Middleton and PCSO Steven Kipling arrived at school to meet Holly and all the other Year 2 children and teachers. Holly was so surprised when the police turned up at school for her to get all comfy, cosy in the police van and read pages from her book.
Holly said she felt a little nervous but then she felt really happy when she read her book sitting in the police van. All of Holly’s friends loved to see Holly reading in such ‘extreme circumstances’. There was then an opportunity for all the children to look around the van and talk with the PCSOs.
Holly loves to read and Mrs McCormick helped to organise this event with Holly’s mam. We are delighted that Newton Aycliffe Police were able to help Holly to ‘extreme read!’ and that they also recognise that reading is so important for all children. Reading MUST BE FUN so that we become lifelong readers and reading in the police van was HUGE FUN!
Children who attend Sugar Hill have had some fabulous ideas for extreme reading and with the fantastic support from Newton Aycliffe police this is a ‘reading memory’ that will stay with Holly forever.
Holly wants to say a huge thank you to the police as do Year 2 staff and Literacy Lead Mrs McCormack. Positive links with our local police force are so important.
