Craig Heap, ex-Olympic and Commonwealth Games gymnast visited Greenfield to work with a select group of pupils on Monday 14th October. The BBC 5 Live commentator’s visit coincided with an initiative with Sky Sports Living for Sport that Greenfield Community College have signed up to for the fourth consecutive year using sport as a tool to motivate and inspire 11-16 year olds.
Craig worked with a selection of pupils from one half of year 8 who are a Gifted and Talented PE group. The first hour consisted of a theory-based session focusing on Craig’s story and his ‘6 key skills to success’. Over the next hour and a half Craig did a series of team building, problem solving and physical challenges for the pupils to overcome in the sports hall.
At the end of the session they were asked to set targets in relation to the ‘6 key skills to success’ and focus on improving a couple of these in the coming months which would impact upon their future achievements.
During his visit Craig also found time to team-teach a couple of lessons with Mr Butterworth. The first was a basketball lesson with a year 7 class and the second was based around a theme of team building with a class from the other half of the year 8 cohort.
Mr Butterworth added “Craig’s visit was an inspiring reward for our pupils who have shown great commitment and dedication at the start of this academic year. The students loved hearing Craig’s story and sharing their experiences of their project with him. Most importantly, our young people have learned first-hand that sport can teach them so much. Whether it is the social skills needed to be a team player or the focus and determination required to do a job well, Sky Sports Living for Sport is helping them to learn important life lessons.”
