Each year 100,000 students across the UK enter the Senior Maths Challenge and students at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, Darlington are increasingly involved, hoping to gain a gold certificate awarded to the top 10%.
Helen Greaves, course leader for A Level mathematics at QE, said: “We were extremely impressed that 56 of our talented mathematicians participated in the competition excelling themselves gaining 5 gold, 13 silver and 17 bronze certificates. We are very proud of success of all the students who took part.”
The five students awarded a gold certificate are first year students Martin Duggan and Cameron Grove and second years Daniel Legg, Jason Loveridge and Adam Elders. Adam, who is hoping to take up a place at university to study maths, also received a certificate for achieving the top results in the College. Martin, Cameron, Daniel and Jason are all planning to study either mathematics or related subjects, such as engineering and computing, at university.
Helen added: “An increasing number of students are choosing to study A Level mathematics at QE and this competition provides an excellent opportunity for them to enjoy the challenge of applying their mathematical skills.”
