A COMMUNITY SPIRIT

From its busy Trade & Craft Fairs to its highly successful children’s discos to its many acts of individual kindness, Aycliffe charity ‘Community Spirit’ does what it says on the tin … it bolsters and builds our community togetherness.

Indeed, in a world which seems in some ways to be collapsing into bitterness and bickering, it is more important than ever that we have such an organisation in Aycliffe, and it is the Newton News’s delight this week to be able to showcase the work of this new but notable group.

In future weeks we would hope to be able to promote some of the other wonderful community and charity groups on the town, and would appeal for other organisations to send us the information for a similar piece on them.

AN ACTIVE TOWN COUNCIL

Sometimes our Town Council finds itself in the news for all the wrong reasons, but this week we note the good news. We appreciate the Council’s resolutions, within its own organisation, to look into ways to scale down its Single Use Plastics and to cut its Carbon emissions.

These resolutions seem to us to be responsible decisions. We note also the Himalayan ‘Balsam Bash’ seeking volunteers to help control this invasive plant, and we encourage readers to ‘nominate a garden that makes you smile’ for the Town Council Garden and Allotment Competitions.

TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE

Finally, we are pleased to see the North East Joint Transport Committee’s investment bid for the County, and note that it includes a bid to demolish and rebuild Durham Bus Station – something of which every bus user who has cause to use the bus station will approve. It is true that transport infrastructure in the North East has been substantially underfunded for years, so let’s hope the bid is successful.
