Last week Dr Maths, aka Steve Humble, visited Greenfield Community College for a day of maths fun and games with students. Steve is a member of the faculty of Newcastle University’s School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences and the writer of the fortnightly “Dr Maths” column for the Evening Chronicle. He has a well-earned positive reputation for delivering activities to improve achievement in maths and student’s enjoyment.
Over the course of the day students from years 7, 8 and 10 at Greenfield worked with Dr Maths to create maths walks around school. These will be put to future use by students as they continue their learning. In the afternoon all of Year 8 joined Steve for a Magic Maths afternoon, learning maths card tricks and more!
All of the students involved enjoyed working with Dr Maths and learning whilst having fun! The visit from Dr Maths was made possible by a grant from the Royal Institution of Great Britain’s Enrichment and Enhancement Scheme. We hope that the skills and techniques developed during the day will continue to have a positive effect on students at Greenfield!
