Durham Alochol Self Support groups have been running now for over three years and we have seven groups running in the Durham area. We started the Newton Aycliffe group in June 2013 after realising the problems of alcohol in Newton Aycliffe.
The group meets in Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre Ash Room every Thursday from 11am till 1pm. In September of this year we were approached by Shildon Alive to open a self support group in Shildon  which has turned out well
When people come they can be reassured it is a non- judgemental group and be aware that everyone is equal.People come with various stages of alcohol problems, even if just worried about the glass of wine they have every evening after work.
The meetings are very informal with a chat over coffee to discus coping strategies and pathways to help with alcohol problems. I would like to thank Newton Aycliffe Councillors for their generous donation which will be used for diversion activities. We are a registered charity and work with volunteers all of whom are in recovery themselves.
If anybody feels they would benefit from the group feel free to phone or pop into one of our meetings. For more information telephone Lisa on 07921816549 or visit our website www.durhamalcoholselfsupport.co.uk
