Runners across the North East are getting under starters orders and booking their place for Darlington’s annual 10K race, which takes place on Sunday 3 August.
The popular event is expected to attract over 2,000 entries from people of all ages and abilities, including professional athletes and enthusiastic amateurs as well as those who are new to the sport.
A new partnership with national retailer, Up & Running, whose Darlington branch is at the heart of the local running community, is also bringing a new dimension to this year’s race – giving entrants the opportunity to access expert advice and guidance from the knowledgeable staff team at their High Row store and via the events Facebook listing.
Dan Rowlands, store manager at Up & Running, said: “We’re delighted to officially partner with Darlington Borough Council on this fantastic event which has become a diary staple in the local running scene. We are passionate about running and believe in helping people to get the most out of their running experience – whether that’s providing free in-store gait analysis or friendly advice and guidance to help people achieve their goals. We also operate a social running group from the shop every Monday night, from 6.15pm which can be a great support for people training for the event, as well as for those who want to make new friends with similar interests.”
Cllr Chris McEwan, cabinet member for economy, said: “Darlington 10k has a huge following and will drive thousands of runners and supporters into the heart of the town centre, creating a wealth of opportunities for local businesses. Partnerships like this are a great example of how businesses can work with the council to strengthen our local economy and maximise the value of local events, both on the day and in the lead up. They also highlight the important role businesses have in developing engaged and connected communities and the positive impact they can have on helping people to live well and stay healthy.”
Phil Haymer, race director, said: “Runner numbers have been steadily rising back to the national standard, and we are confident that this year’s race will attract more people than ever! Whether you’re a seasoned pro who’s been pounding the pavements for several years, or you’re a complete novice who just fancies giving it a go or wants to do something to improve your fitness, please sign up! It’s a great event, along an attractive route through the town centre and residential streets in the leafy West End. There’s always loads going on and it is a fantastic way to spend a Sunday.”
The race is open to people aged 15 and over and costs £23 for people aged 18+ (£14 for juniors). Visit www.enjoydarlington.co.uk/event-info/darlington-10k/ for information on how to enter. Registrations close on 30 July.
People entering the race are encouraged to follow the Darlington 10k event listing available via the council’s Facebook page which will be updated with the latest race information and content from Up & Running about training, exercise and nutrition.
Information about other council supported racing events including the Junior 3K Road Run and the Family Fun Run will be released soon – keep an eye on the Enjoy Darlington website and the council’s social media channels for information.
