Over the last few weeks Greenfield Community College has welcomed ‘CrossFit All Out’ into school to allow pupils access to an alternative method of fitness training, focusing on strength and conditioning. The visits coincided with the health related fitness topic being covered within the curriculum, and added depth and variation to the more traditional forms of exercise such as circuit training and step aerobics.
CrossFit All Out were extremely professional and provided an excellent opportunity for our pupils to challenge themselves in a typical CrossFit style session format. They run regular sessions for young people and adults based on Northfield Way in Newton Aycliffe – it was great to be able to support a local business whilst expanding the skills and knowledge of Greenfield students.
Pupils worked in teams and attempted exercises such as kettle bell swings, wall balls, sit ups and burpees. Furthermore, they were learning new terms used in CrossFit such as WOD (Workout of the Day) and AMRAP (As Many Rounds as Possible). Their coaches stressed the importance of performing the various exercises with correct technique to maximise the reward and reduce the chance of injury.
Once this was mastered, the pupils attempted the challenge of completing AMRAP within their teams. A real sense of co-operation and teamwork was on show as the pupils worked intensely in their quest to become Greenfield CrossFit champions!
