Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club’s 1st team, sponsored by Franks the Flooring Store, gained sweet revenge for losing away at Thornaby 2nd XI earlier in the season when they thumped the same side in their return home game by 123 runs in the NYSD 2nd division. Electing to bat first Aycliffe captain Sam Telford (29 runs) and fellow opener Adam Gittins (31 runs) got their side off to a good start, sharing a 59 run partnership for the first wicket. However a mini collapse left Aycliffe wobbling on 76 for 4 just after the half way stage. Chris Palmer (38 runs off 55 balls) and Michael Howe (26 runs off 38 balls), lead the revival taking their side to 141 before both were dismissed in quick succession. Jack Slatcher chipped in with a late order cameo, scoring 15 runs from 19 balls as the Aycliffe innings finished on a respectable 176 for 8 after their allotted 50 overs. When the visitors batted they were simply blown away by some outstanding bowling from Aycliffe’s Michael Howe (sponsored by Yvonne and Bob Wood), who finished with career best figures of 6 for 29 and Jack Slatcher who took 4 for 22 as Thornaby were dismissed for just 53 from 21.5 overs. This emphatic victory lifts Aycliffe to 6th place in the table, their highest position of the season so far.
The u17’s finished their season with a heavy defeat away at Sedgefield in the NYSD Junior league.
Our u12’s ended their season with an agonising last ball defeat at home to Sedgefield in the NYACC league. When Aycliffe batted there were some good performances by Harrison Pearson, who top scored with 19, Thomas Dearden hit an unbeaten 14 and Adam Shaw also batted well scoring 11 not out. In the Sedgefield innings, Harrison Pearson and Will Dearden both bowled well, each taking 3 wickets for Aycliffe. The u12’s have had an excellent season and, with some other games still to be played, are likely to finish in a highly respectable fourth place in the league.
