Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club’s 1st team, sponsored by Franks the Flooring Store were well beaten by 168 runs away at Thornaby 2nd XI in the NYSD 2nd division. Choosing to bowl first Aycliffe bowlers were put to the sword by the homeside batsmen as they amassed 263 for 5 declared after 48 overs despite some superb bowling from James Layfield-Carroll (sponsored by Signature Tiling) who took 4 for 44 despite feeling unwell. In reply Aycliffe never got any momentum in their innings and were bowled out for just 95 after 41.5 overs with only Patrick Howe (25 runs), Adam Gittins (17 runs) and Graham Telford (12 runs) reaching double figures.
A very young 2nd team, with three players making their senior debuts for Aycliffe, did superbly well to earn a deserved draw at home to Guisborough 2nd team in the NYSD 4th division. The visitors chose to bat first and scored an impregnable 261 for 4 from their 40 overs. 15 year old debutant Iain Robson was the pick of the Aycliffe bowlers taking 2 for 45 from his 10 overs, with 14 year old David Robinson and 13 year old Leo Mercy both chipping in with a wicket apiece. In reply captain Joe Haines (sponsored by Pheonix Energy) held the innings together with an excellent 55 from 89 balls, including 9 boundaries. He was given solid support from both James Brown (33 from 45 balls) and Dan Bowmer ( 17 not out from 41 balls) as the hosts batted out the overs to finish on a creditable 135 for 4 from their allotted 40 overs.
The u15’s lost in their first “round robin” cup match at home to Sedgefield u15’s by 99 runs. Sedgefield were asked to bat first and scored 131 for 2 in their 20 overs with Thomas Dearden and Leo Mercy each taking a wicket for Aycliffe. In reply the home side were dismissed for 32 after 16.2 overs with only Charlie Cayless reaching double figures with 11 runs. The u15’s also lost their second “round robin” cup match, this time at home to Stockton u15’s by ten wickets, despite batting well and scoring 84 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs thanks to good innings from both Kyle Cuthbertson (19 runs) and Matty Greaves (17 runs). Special mention must go to both Jack Paylor and James Coupland for some outstanding fielding when Stockton were batting.
The u13’s also lost their first “round robin” cup match at home to Sedgefield u13’s by 76 runs. The visitors chose to bat first and set a challenging total of 129 for 2 despite some good bowling from Dan Heaton and James Coupland who both finished their bowling spells with a wicket apiece. In reply, the Dearden brothers (Thomas 13 runs) and Will (8 runs) batted well, but Aycliffe were ultimately restricted to 53 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs.
The u11’s began their season with a difficult game away at Darlington and performed well despite losing by 25 runs. There were good individual performances from Will Dearden, who top scored with 17 runs and Ollie Paylor who scored 9 runs. Alfie Spensley took the honours with the ball with three wickets, Thomas Towler and AJ Wild also bowled well, each taking one wicket.
