Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club’s 2nd team team sponsored by Franks The Flooring Store had a record breaking victory when they defeated promotion favourite’s Whitby at home by 3 wickets in the 3rd division of the NYSD. Whitby were asked to bat first and scored a seemingly impregnable 211 for 8 declared after 48 overs, despite some impressive bowling from medium pacer Neil Bancroft who finished with 5 for 33 from 6 overs.
In reply opener Joe Haines scored his maiden half century when he made 54 and captain Adam Gittins smashed 66, to give Aycliffe a great start with a brilliant 3rd wicket partnership of 114, which left the home side well set at 168 for 3. A few wickets were lost in the scamble for runs towards the end of the innings, but Neil Bancroft kept his cool to score a timely unbeaten 31 to give Aycliffe a memorable win by 3 wickets after 50.5 overs. The total of 214 is a new second team record for the highest score to win a game batting second.
Newton Aycliffe’s 1st team were easily beaten away at lowly Normanby Hall 2nd team in the 2nd division of the NYSD. Electing to bat first, Aycliffe were skittled for just 78 after 37 overs, with only Michael Howe (14), Luke Telford (13) and Pritpal Grewal (11) reaching double figures in an awful batting performance. In reply. the homeside coasted to victory for the loss of 3 wickets after just 18.5 overs despite fast bowler Sean Morgan taking 2 for 26 from his 7 overs. The defeat sees Aycliffe slip down to 6th place in the table.
Newton Aycliffe’s under 15’s containing five u13’s players were beaten away at Brandon by 19 runs. The homeside scored 102 for 7 in their 20 overs with Aycliffe’s Ryan Patrick the pick of the bowlers taking 3 wickets for just 11 runs. In reply Aycliffe openers Jack Lowery (24 runs) and Dan Bowmer (21 runs) got their side off to a great start with a first wicket partnership of 55, but wickets fell at regular intervals as the team pushed for quick runs and the innings eventually closed at 83 for 6.
The under 13’s gave a good performance in a match marred by rain, but still lost at home to Wolviston by 35 runs. Wolviston batted first and scored 122 for 3 in their 20 overs with Dominic Hindmarsh the pick of the bowlers taking 2 for 9 from his 4 overs. In reply Aycliffe were restricted to 87 for 9 and there was good performances with the bat from Jack Lowery and Nathan Parry, who both scored 19 runs.
