Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club’s 1st team, sponsored by Franks the Flooring Store, dug very deep to earn a well deserved draw at home to second in the table Darlington 2nd XI in the NYSD 2nd division. The visitors were asked to bat first and piled up a huge 285 for 5 declared after 47 overs with Aycliffe bowlers Matty Greaves (2 for 39), Sam Telford (1 for 22) and James Layfield-Carroll (1 for 43) all toiling hard in the hot sunshine. In reply, Aycliffe’s all time leading run scorer Chris Palmer (sponsored by Vanila Design & Print) extended his record still further when he top scored with a superb 78 off 71 balls and his innings included 13 boundaries and three sixes. Captain Sam Telford continued his recent good form when he opened the innings with a quickfire 66 from 54 balls, hitting seven boundaries and four sixes and he was given solid support by Adam Gittins with a watchful 39 off 125 balls, including five boundaries. Aycliffe’s innings eventually closed with a very respectable total of 234 for 7 after 53 overs, which earned them a valuable draw.
Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club’s 2nd XI lost by five wickets away at Wolviston 2nd XI in the NYSD 4th division. Electing to bat first Aycliffe were dismissed for 112 after 24.3 overs despite some positive batting by Ramzan Hussain (37 from 37 balls), Tom Dearden (16 off 9 balls) and Adam Shaw (15 off 13 balls). In reply, the homeside reached their victory target after 24.4 overs, but lost five wickets thanks to some good bowling by debutant Terence Smit (2 for 3), Dan Heaton (sponsored by Ian Hannant) (2 for 32) and Tom Dearden (1 for 30).
The U13’s were well beaten by 54 runs at home to Richmond in the NYACC League cup. Electing to bat first, the visitors scored 171 for 5 in their 20 overs despite career best bowling figures by Liam Scott who finished with 3 for 14. In reply, the challenging target proved too much for Aycliffe, but they still managed to reach 117 for 7 in their 20 overs thanks to excellent innings from both, Joey Hayman (retired on 31 from just 22 balls) and Tom Norman (sponsored by Recruiterite), who retired on a career best 30 from 43 balls.
Aycliffe’s u11’s won their third consecutive game when they came out on top by 28 runs away at Barnard Castle in the NYACC League. Eight year old Harvey Palmer continued his good form with the ball taking 3 for 8 from his 3 overs and captain Miles Telford then top scored with 11 not out and Morgan Jones scored 10 in the Aycliffe reply, which helped their team to victory and moved them up to fifth place in the table.
The club’s U11’s girls team’s unbeaten start to the season came to an end when they narrowly lost at home to Sedgefield in a dramatic game by just four runs in the Durham Girls Junior League, but despite this defeat, they still remain top of their league.
