Following a busy season being very hands-on the Cree group from Greenfield Arts had the opportunity to visit the Baltic Centre in Gateshead as part of the Great Exhibition of the North.
The experience was also part of a new venture for the Cree Men entitled ‘Quest for a Perfect Shirt’. The group met up with artist Richard Bliss who will be leading the project. The venue formed the perfect backdrop for the launch. Richard is a visual artist who will be asking big questions, exploring who we are, what it means to live in this place, in this time – all through the vehicle of shirts!
Cree Men will work together to explore ideas about identity design, construct and engineer work as part of a forthcoming exhibition using ideas, images, stories and symbols from our past, where we live and what is happening around us. This will be realised into visual art pieces as part of the ‘Quest for the Perfect Shirt’ project.
“It was good to visit the work at the Baltic as part of our project working with artist Richard Bliss,” said Katy Milne, Director of Arts and Creativity at Greenfield Arts “Michael Dean’s exhibition in particular opened up lots of interesting debate. The Cree Men enjoyed the visit and have come back with lots of ideas to explore.” Michael Dean, a respected artist from the region, is known for his immersive sculptural installations, exploring language, intimacy and the politics of being in the world. “It was really interesting to see the exhibitions and to get us thinking and having a conversation. I really enjoyed it” said Cree member David.
The Cree men meet every Monday from 10:30 – 12:30 at Greenfield Arts, If you would like to know more or feel you would benefit from the social well-being this group offers please contact our friendly team on 01325 379048 or visit our website www.greenfield-arts.co.uk
