COUNTY COUNCIL MEETINGS
As for the County Council:
• The DCC Environment Scrutiny meeting on Monday 9 March dealt with: the important issue of fuel poverty; the ticking timebomb which is low carbon funding; and the issues of major public interest: Leisure Centres, and the Gala Theatre, Durham.
I also attended two meetings in connection with my responsibilities in my role as DCC Cabinet Support:
• Climate Action County Durham (CACD) met on Thursday 5 March, at which I spoke about the DCC Climate Emergency Response Action Plan. DCC’s job now is to recruit partners and ‘allies’ to deliver the Plan, and CACD hopes to develop into such an alliance of partners. The meeting also heard from Peter Stark, who is trying to set up a North East Climate Coalition (NECC) to do the same for the North-East.
• Then, on the evening of Thursday 5 March, I attended a meeting of the Friends of the Stockton & Darlington Railway. Chair Trish Pemberton described the meetings she had attended with MPs and the Heritage Alliance, and Vice-Chair Niall Hammond described a ‘pleasing’ meeting with DCC, where he learned how Council is preparing the infrastructure and access for visitors to the railway’s bicentenary in 2025.
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING
• The Great Aycliffe Town Council Policy & Resources Meeting on Wednesday 4 March: objected to BT’s decision to remove the telephone box at Whinlatter Place; reported on its (excellent) internal audit procedures; and agreed to buy four bespoke metal seats for VE Day.
CONSULTATIONS AND THE BIG SPRING CLEAN
DCC wants to know your views on the following consultations:
• Supporting young people to have an independent voice;
• Road safety;
• Licensing of privately rented homes in some areas of the county.
Finally, why not get involved in the Big Spring Clean?
