A mosaic inspired by the coastal denes in County Durham has been designed by children from the east of the county.
Pupils from Easington Colliery Primary School worked with local artist Angela Tomlinson to create the artwork, which represents their time learning about their local area through the National Lottery Heritage funded DENE project (Discover, Explore, Nature and the Environment).
The project aims to raise awareness of the importance of the coastal denes in County Durham. The children spent time exploring the Hawthorne Dene and Castle Eden Dene, learning about the wildlife and landscapes.
From learning about woodland myths and legends to taking part in muddy faces sessions, orienteering and the John Muir Award, pupils from across all year groups have been involved in the project.
The artwork will be on display in the school reception area for years to come.
Louise Harrington, project officer for the Heritage Coast Partnership, said: “Both the staff and pupils have embraced the DENE project wholeheartedly. The pupils now have an appreciation of the denes and their importance to the heritage and landscape of the Durham Coast.”
