Dear Sir,
I would like to be afforded the opportunity to respond to the article published in a recent publication regarding an “Ignorant Cyclist”.
I have been a cyclist for 40 years and have never encountered the abuse and intimidation I received at the hands of a car driver on Burn Lane on that day.The gentleman concerned resorted to gutter language in order to remonstrate and inform the wrongs and rights of the road whilst brandishing a walking stick at head height.
As I recently moved to the area I was not aware of a cycle lane on Burn Lane. I apologise for my lack of awareness and can confirm that I will be utilising the cycle lane in future. I am used to resolving issues in a calm professional manner as I believe this achieves so much more than ranting and abusing strangers.
Whilst I appreciate the gentleman was frustrated I would strongly ask him to consider his own behaviour and how this could be interpreted by others. At the time of the incident the gentleman concerned had a young man in the car who may or may not have been his son or grandson.
I would hope that this is not typical of the example he would normally demonstrate. As for being dressed for the occasion – I wear a fluorescent green jacket as I travel to work in the early hours and need car drivers to see me! I trust this matter is now bought to an end.
