A fantastic new exhibition has opened in Greenfield Gallery. The Community Art Project is exhibiting a colourful and creative collection of recent work until Wednesday 8th October.
The project provides an opportunity for people with learning disabilities to try out and pursue various visual arts activities with guidance and encouragement from a professional artist.
Currently around thirty five individuals attend the CAP over its five operating days.
The sorts of activities involved are; oil, acrylic and watercolour painting, drawing, sculpting, pottery, screenprinting, lino-cut and monoprinting, photography and digital art but the CAP aims to facilitate as far as possible, whatever ideas people generate and express. The exhibition at Greenfield Arts includes new works in various media.
As well as numerous exhibitions at The Arts Centre in Darlington where the CAP was previously based, service users have had work exhibited in London, Glasgow, Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Stockton, Bishop Auckland, Newton Aycliffe and Billingham.
Twenty nine artists have been selected for the past three Dover Prize competitions (open to application from all artists in the North East) and five artists formed part of the Earth Vision project that toured various venues in Germany, Austria and Italy. The CAP also has work on display in Pizza Express restaurant in Darlington.
Artwork from the CAP can be viewed online within the Arts section of the Darlington Borough Council website with an online gallery section showing examples of work (www.darlington.gov.uk/communityart).
The Community Art Project is based at The Bridge in Darlington and is part of Darlington Borough Council’s Services for People and is funded and managed as part of the Adult Learning Disability Service.
