On Friday 24th April Sir Peter Vardy DL officially opened the new specialist training college for adults with learning disabilities called the “Sir Peter Vardy Enterprise Centre” at Thornbeck College, Newton Aycliffe.
The North East Autism Society (NEAS) have completed renovation work on a disused building at the Centre, the charity’s £9m educational facility in Newton Aycliffe.
The new facility offers additional space for the College, a specialist training centre that provides personalised study programmes for learners with autism, learning difficulties and, or disabilities, for people aged 16 to 25 years old.
Christine Dempster, Director of Education at NEAS said; “It was a privilege to show Sir Peter our college facilities and demonstrate our relentless drive to continue to expand the range of meaningful employment opportunities for our learners. The new centre will enable the college to increase its offer of vocational pathways available to learners and will include car maintenance, woodwork and catering.”
Sir Peter Vardy toured the new facilities and had the opportunity to meet learners who access the services. The college works in partnership with local businesses to give learners the opportunity to practice and develop work related skills in a range of supported and open employment projects. Learning programmes focus on equipping learners with the skills that they need for living and work.
