During this past year everyone has been affected with the recession which has brought untold hardship to many, most of all it is the poor and vulnerable who mostly suffer.
Our town centre was also affected with the closure of Peter’s the Baker and of Sue Ryder, one of the charity shops on our town.
Part of my Christmas message last year was the prayer to see signs of hope and growth amidst our town and thankfully this now seem to be happening. Although it is always sad to see some of our shops close there is thankfulness that others are taking their place.
We have seen the opening of Alidi, a bright and cheerful store to give us more choice. Then we have Granny’s Kitchen a small shop maybe, but overflowing with household necessities. We should not forget Boola, a shop right up to date with fashion for our younger generation.
The future is looking bright for Aycliffe shopping centre and we should remember the sterling work done by the Town Centre Manager Bryan Haldane, and Phil Wilson our MP who intervened many times to get things moving.
We have a lot to be thankful for and 2013 has plenty more surprises.
Thanks to all those who serve the public so willingly and cheerfully, and spare a thought for those working hard to serve you right up to the Christmas period – give them a smile they deserve it.
On behalf of myself and Churches Together in Great Aycliffe I take this opportunity to wish everyone a peaceful and blessed Christmastide. God bless you all.
