On Friday 5th February, St. Mary’s School held a “Celebration of Music” Assembly. All classes had been learning to play instruments from drums to glockenspiels to recorders and practicing a range of music from nursery rhymes, pop and jazz.
Our school hall was packed as parents and grandparents joined the celebration and the children showcased their musical skills.
Reception sang ‘Animal Fair’ with percussion; Year 1 sang an echo song ‘Hey You!’ and improvised with percussion during a musical interlude. Year 2 played ‘Mary had a Little Lamb’ on the recorder and Year 3 accompanied DeeCee’s Blues as they learned to play the glockenspiel. Year 4 sang ‘Mama Mia’ and accompanied themselves on glockenspiel for the chorus.
Year 5 played recorder to a piece of jazz music, composing their own pieces in small groups to show off their composing skills, understanding of rhythm, and introduction to music notation. Year 6 also accompanied a piece of jazz on glockenspiel and percussion.
Everyone applauded the children on their performances and complimented them on their musical talents and skills. ‘I loved all the different music’ said one parent, ‘Great to see everyone has the potential to become a musician’ said another.
It was a great way to showcase the wonderful music in school which gives the children such a broad appreciation of all musical genres. ‘Lovely Assembly’.
