Members of the public are invited to support the Commonwealth of Nations Flag of Peace initiative as part of this year’s Commonwealth Day.
Marking 10 years since Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II signed the Commonwealth Charter, Durham County Council will be raising the Commonwealth Flag of Peace in Durham City, on Monday 13 March.
The flag, featuring a white dove of peace, symbolises the shared values and principles of the Commonwealth.
These include co-operation on economic and social development, diversity, respect, friendship and the promotion of peace around the world.
The flag will be raised at Durham Market Place, with a ceremony starting at 10.35am.
Those attending can look forward to a Commonwealth flag procession, a proclamation by the Lord Lieutenant of County Durham and a bugler, ahead of the flag raising.
Cllr Joan Nicholson, Vice Chair of Durham County Council, said: “It is important to acknowledge these historic events and to come together as a community to mark them.
“This year’s Commonwealth Day is particularly poignant following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the fact that it is the first presided over by His Majesty King Charles III. We would encourage as many people as possible to join these celebrations and share in the values and aspirations of all Commonwealth countries.”
