An Aycliffe terminally ill baby girl has touched the heart of boxers in the north to enter the ring in aid of the hospital which cared for her.
Rachel Hetherington’s daughter, Briannah, contracted Group B Streptococcus (GBS) during labour, which led to meningitis and irreversible brain damage.
Six months later the youngster has still not opened her eyes and it is unlikely she ever will. Briannah has been given weeks to live but her mother is determined to care for her daughter at home until the end.
Miss Hetherington, friends and family have raised more than £1,600 for paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at James Cook University Hospital – describing the care there as second to none.
Sports promoter Daryll Hall heard about her fundraising efforts and decided to organise a charity boxing tournament at Rainton Meadows Arena, Houghton-le-Spring, on Friday, November 13th featuring 14 bouts, along with entertainment, a raffle and auction.
Daryll from Newton Aycliffe heard what Rachel is going through and wanted to help.
Rachel fears waking up each morning not knowing whether her daughter is still alive.
