On Sunday 17th June, Sam Dawson a Year 7 student from Greenfield Community College represented the North East as a Torch Bearer in the Olympic Relay.
Sam, from Newton Aycliffe, completed a 300m stretch with the torch in Billingham on Sunday afternoon; luckily for him and his family, the rain held off, but the crowds didn’t. Hundreds of people turned out to support Sam dressed in his white Olympic Tracksuit and holding the flaming torch.
Sam said “It was brilliant, what a day!” All his family were out to support him, they had a huge banner and sported homemade T-shirts. Greenfield staff made the journey and gave him even more support from the streets.
Sam was nominated by Greenfield for many reasons but especially for his commitment to all the Olympic Values through his everyday life, in and out of school. Sam is a true inspiration to young people and with this experience as a Torch Bearer, Sam has made his friends, family and Greenfield extremely proud.
Sam’s first official engagement as torch bearer is at Sugar Hill Primary School Tuesday 19th June to help celebrate the school’s Diamond Jubilee Event.
