The Pioneering Care Partnership (PCP) is looking for volunteers to help with a project aimed at improving the health, wellbeing and quality of life for local people.
The Health Buddy scheme is funded through the East Durham Rural Corridor Area Action Partnership and offers flexible, short term assistance to people over 50 years of age from trained volunteer befrienders.
As a Volunteer Befriender/Health Buddy you will develop a trusting relationship with clients, help them with shopping or attending medical appointments, encourage them to engage with social activities or groups and access services, or simply take the time to listen over a cup of tea.
This regular chat provides a vital link into the community to those who can be socially isolated because of restricted mobility or because their family and friends don’t live close by. Health Buddy volunteers encourage people to get out and about – even if it’s just to the end of the garden – and to stay active
If you know your community, are patient and reliable then this could be an ideal opportunity for you.  A full training and support package will be provided by PCP and volunteers can give a minimum of 2 hours a week.
Gayle Parker has volunteered as a Health Buddy for the scheme; and says “I wanted to volunteer in an area which helps other people.  I am studying for a Foundation degree in Health and Social Care and volunteering as a Health Buddy has given me a new perspective to what’s involved. I have enjoyed meeting people and it has not only given me the satisfaction of helping others, I have gained qualifications and experience, which will help me find employment when I’m ready.”
