A long-standing blood donor has won an award for his dedication after saving the lives of up to 300 people through donating his blood.
David Lewis from Aycliffe village made his 100th blood donation on Monday 8th April at the blood donor session at the Newton Aycliffe Methodist Church Hall, in Neville Parade.After his donation Dave joins an elite group of donors that have reached the 100th donation milestone.
Only four per cent of the eligible population currently give blood and just one per cent of these reach 100 donations.
Donna Batty, Lead Donor Relations Manager for County Durham at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “This is another amazing achievement by one of our long standing donors. It is great to see how passionate and dedicated David Lewis is about blood donation. It is easy to forget how much of a difference giving blood can make to people’s lives.
Mr Lewis is an inspiration to us all and we hope that others will follow in his footsteps to save the lives of many more people.”
Anyone aged between 17 – 65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor.
