Local young athlete Courtnie Mills (left) was in action over the bank holiday weekend, in the annual North-East Track & Field Championships at Gateshead International Stadium.
With the forecast for the meeting to be warm and bright, good crowds and high competitor numbers were guaranteed. Courtnie was involved in three events, the 200m, long jump and triple jump.
Being a long jump specialist this is where the focus of the weekend would be for her. Coaches Charlie Meite and Darren Hirst of Shildon Running & Athletic Club were confident of many Personal Bests from a number of the athletes and they were not disappointed.
Among those were 3 new PBs from Courtnie in all of her events. The most notable was indeed the Long Jump, with a distance of 4.52m which brought with it a silver medal. The winner was local Gateshead athlete Emily Gargan, who is an outstanding athlete and fighting for the top places in England, whilst third spot went to Grace Turner of Birtley Harriers.
Courtnie who lives in Byerley Park and attends Greenfield College is constantly improving and making good progress year on year and has set her sights on many of the up and coming meetings this summer. She feels sure that the best of her performances are yet to be seen thus far and is looking forward to the County Finals on 8th June at Jarrows Monkton Stadium. Keep working hard Courtnie and good luck.
