Adam Jarps a cyclist from Newton Aycliffe attends Carmel College Darlington and is a member of Hetton Hawks Cycling Club.
On 18th June 2015 he took part in the GHS District Championship, a 10 mile time trial held on course M105 (North East) in Ponteland for children aged 12 to 16. He was the fastest 15 year old and also the fastest rider overall with a qualifying time of 24 min 24 sec, which is 30 secs faster than the official Under 16’s record on this course.
This meant he qualified for the GHS National Championship Final on 12th Sept on course F10/10 an open road course on the A46 at Ware near Stevenage, the terrain is rolling with an elevation of just under 200 feet, the day was warm and windy.The start was delayed due to a broken down lorry blocking a roundabout on the course, but eventually the riders got underway.
A total of 132 riders took part and Adam finished 34th overall with time of 22 min 58 sec and was 12th out of 38 in the 15 year old boy category. A great achievement as he only started cycling in Oct 2013.
Adam also took part in the Scunthorpe Track League over the summer riding on an outdoor velodrome and was the winner in the U16 category, he’s looking forward to riding on the new velodrome at Middlesbrough Sports Village which officially opened on Wed 16th Sept.
He was also part of the North East U16 boys team that rode in the Prudential London Grand Prix on 1st August where they finished 8th out of 14 regional teams after two team riders just missed being caught up in a crash. He said ‘it was like riding a pro race, with team areas and team jerseys and riding down the Mall towards Buckingham Palace was great’
Adam was invited to attend the Regional School of Racing (RSR) Circuit training sessions run by British Cycling GBCT Coaches throughout the country over the summer and he is hoping to be invited to join the RSR Track training session held at Glasgow Velodrome over the winter season.
He is now looking forward to the National Closed Circuit 10 mile Time Trial and the National Hill Climb Trial later in the year and to competing in Cyclocross over the winter.
