Newton Aycliffe Women 3 v Seaham Coast 2
Another great turnout to support the team, for what was always going to be a tightly contested game, on top of that you can’t say very often that you won 3-2 and scored 5 goals!
The game started evenly with neither side creating many chances. Then the most bizarre thing happened, an easy ball back to the keeper, who controlled well and then turned away from the on rushing striker and the ball bobbled into the net. Heads went down a little and within minutes Seaham whip in a corner and our defender deflects it to her own goal. Two own goals and only 10 minutes played. Aycliffe were rattled and now needed to settle back into the game, they were asked to slow it down and get the ball on the floor, this worked well and they slowly worked their way back into the game and got their reward. Play was broken down at the back by Amelia who played forward to Jordan, quick thinking from Jordan found Alex free who controlled the ball into Kate. Kate saw the space behind the defence, chipped the ball forward then got onto the end of her own through ball, she kept her cool and calmly slotted the ball into the corner to halve the deficit.
Half time, four changes were made and the team needed to show grit, determination, and quality to get something from the game. Second half started well as Aycliffe were now looking more comfortable on the ball and it wasn’t long before the equaliser came and what a goal. After great build up play, the ball finds Alex on the left wing who cut into the box and played a perfect ball to the back post where Meg had timed her run to perfection to tap in, under pressure from close range, to level the game. Straight from the restart, Aycliffe win a corner, Amber sends in the corner, picking out Morgan in the middle box who calmly volleyed in for Aycliffe’s third. Having got in front, the women were playing with confidence, however, Seaham we’re now pushing for the equaliser but Courtney made some brilliant saves, more than redeeming herself from the mistake in the first half. Today showed the spirit we now have in this team, even after scoring 2 own goals they all dug deep and ground out the win, well done ladies. POTM: Meg.
