Our award winning town War Memorial, outside St. Clare’s Church, was a fitting focal point for the tribute to Drummer Lee Rigby killed recently in London.
His death caused a groundswell of anger mixed with grief and people all over the world have shown their horror and disgust but, at the same time, demonstrating great sympathy for the soldier’s family.
Nearly 200 people met with flowers at 12.30pm last Saturday to pay their respects to this young soldier cruelly murdered by fanatics. It was an emotional occasion organised by serving Newton Aycliffe soldier David Pickering who called the townspeople together to show support for Drummer Rigby’s family.
Rev. Julie Wing was among the mourners and led with a homage and prayers for the fallen soldier. St. Clare’s Church was opened for people to sign the Book of Remembrance and refreshments were served in the church hall.
Since Saturday more people have added bunches of flowers and there are now well over 100 floral tributes.
Newton News was in attendance at this event and has printed copies of all the photographs taken on this occasion which will be placed in the Book of Remembrance.
The photographs and messages of condolence will be sent along with copies of the Newton News to the wife and family of Drummer Lee Rigby with the hope it will bring some comfort and support in their bereavement.
