Retired Police Detective and his wife, Billy and Jean Walker of Hareson Road, celebrated their 50th Anniversary on the 6th October by taking a holiday in Scarbrough followed by a cruise in the Caribbbean. Billy quipped: “50 years is a long time so we decided to push the boat out”
The couple travel to Scarborough to meet up with former Aycliffe colleague P.C. Tommy Fox who moved to North Yorkshire in the 70’s attaining the rank of Chief Superintendent. He is now the Leader of Scarborough Council.
Billy comes from Ferryhill and he met Jean, from Chilton, at a Dance in the Welfare Hall at Ferryhill Station. Billy’s pal was courting Jean, but she liked Billy, and gave up her boyfriend for him, marrying him later in St. Aidan’s Church, Chilton.
Billy was a miner for 8 years and Jean worked at Duncans at Neville Parade.
Billy left the mines to work at Abex on the Industrial Estate, moving to Aycliffe in 1963. Inspector Firth encouraged him to join the police force and he trod the beat for six years before joining CID, serving all over the County before retiring with 25 years service in 1992.
Jean worked for M&S at Stockton and Darlington before taking a job with G.E.C. at Aycliffe for 13 years and then Somerfields before retiring.
After retiring Billy worked in Security and dabbled in a Wedding Video business before ending his working life. The couple have enjoyed holidays all over the world, Billy learnt to play classical music and Jean is a crossword fanatic.
Billy and Jean have been together since their teens, they think alike are totally compatible and believe that has given them a happy marriage.
