Sedgefield Water Polo club Under 19 boys team travelled to Maltby in Yorkshire for the Northern League Junior Final with a very young team. In their first game they played Bridgefield from Liverpool and were comfortable winners 10-5. In the second game they played local team Castleford and after a score of 6-4 at halftime Sedgefield dominated the second half to win 14-7.
In the tournament decider Sedgefield were up against the Yorkshire Champions and favourites Sheffield. Once again it was close at half time, 5-5, but Sedgefield’s fitness told in the second half winning 10-7.
This was an excellent performance by Sedgefield who are the only team that train in a shallow pool at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre. Once again this competition confirmed Sedgefield as the strongest club in North of England Junior Polo.
The team was superbly led by captain Sebastian Reichel (17) with strong support from James Pratt (16), Joe Barker (16), Adam Courtley (17), Ben Turnbull (15) and John Pratt (15).
The younger members of the team Connor Keeble (13), Michael Cousins (13), Kris Egginton (13), Richard Murray (13) and Ben Stephenson (12) showed great maturity in matching up to much bigger and older opposition.
Six of the Sedgefield team are in GB junior squads.
