Newton Aycliffe’s game against Jarrow Roofing fell victim to the weather last Saturday. The combination of snow & rain saw off all but one of the fixtures in the Ebac Northern League, with the match on West Allotment Celtic’s artificial pitch being the only league survivor.
With no midweek game either last week Aycliffe played a friendly against Darlington at the Eastbourne Sports Complex with the Quakers taking a 1-0 win.
The break has given those Aycliffe players on the injury list some welcome recovery time with keeper James Winter playing the first half against Darlington. Unfortunately Sean Tarling’s leg injury sustained against Billinghan Synthonia will require a lengthy recovery.
This Saturday (9th December) Aycliffe travel to 11th placed Ashington. The Colliers earned a point at Moore Lane in the first week of the season. Recently, however, they have seen a change of management with ex-England cricketer Steve Harmison leaving. His brothers Ben & James have also now moved on to North Shields and Blyth respectively. Since their departure Ashington have had mixed results & have won 5 and lost 4 at home this season.
On Wednesday 13 December Aycliffe travel to North Shields to play another match that has been rearranged due to the wet weather.
Providing there are no further postponements the Shields game will be Aycliffe’s last midweek game of the season.
Aycliffe’s last game at Moore Lane in 2017 will be against Seaham Red Star on Saturday 16 December, kick off 3pm.
