Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club’s 1st team, sponsored by Franks the Flooring Store managed to beat the poor weather but couldn’t quite take victory away at Bedale 1st XI in the NYSD 2nd division and had to be content with a draw. Aycliffe lost the toss and were asked to bat first in tricky conditions and were bowled out for 186 after 49.1 overs.
Adam Gittins top scored for the visitors with a workman like 41, Sam Telford smashed 33 from just 15 balls faced, with other contributions coming from Adam Randall who scored 32 and Patrick Howe (sponsored by Tom Steele) with 20 runs.
In reply, Aycliffe bowled and fielded well to restrict the home side to 184 for 6 from their allotted 49 overs. Michael Howe, playing his 250th senior game for Aycliffe, was the pick of the bowlers taking 2 for 45 and Luke Telford, Patrick Howe, James Layfield-Carroll and Jack Slatcher all chipped in with a wicket apiece.
The second team’s first game of the season got off to a damp start as their game at home to Bedale 2nd XI in the NYSD 4th division was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to persistent rain.
The U11’s also suffered the same fate as their first game of the season away at Darlington RA was also postponed because of the weather.
Newton Aycliffe’s ever growing under 9’s squad entered three teams into the Sedgefield Softball 6-a-side Cricket Festival on Sunday 28th April and this included our very first all girls cricket team.
This was the first time that many of the players had played in a cricket competition and they all played very well and represented our town with credit. Phoebe Sproat was named player of the tournament for the girls team and Micah Thomson and Joey Hayman were named players of the tournament for their respective teams.
