In March Greenfield Gallery will host an exhibition entitled “Miners’ Art.” This collection of works by some of County Durham’s finest artists who were also miners has been curated and sponsored by Dr Peter Norton, in collaboration with Greenfield Arts.
Many previous exhibitions of miners’ art have depicted the harsh conditions of pit life and the artists with work in this exhibition have been very successful in doing so. However, this exhibition has been assembled to show their skill in illustrating the social life and countryside around them with portraiture, landscapes and even abstract art. Many of the works included in this exhibition have not been exhibited before.
The works on show are, in the majority, by living mining artists, often self-taught, who all worked in the Durham Coalfield. The four main exhibitors all turned professional after their time in the coal industry. The exhibition is a fantastic opportunity to see works by Norman Cornish, Tom Lamb, Bill Hindmarsh and Derek Slater who have contributed to the majority of the exhibition. Other fellow miners who have sadly passed away, such as Tom McGuinness and Tom Atkinson are also shown along with some lesser known artists who have all spent time “doon the pit”. Many of the works will be for sale, whilst some have been kindly loaned from private collections.

An illustrated brochure to accompany the exhibition will be for sale from the gallery, priced at £3.
The exhibition will run from Thursday 7th March 2013 until Wednesday 3rd April 2013. The Greenfield Gallery is open Monday to Thursday 10am to 9pm, and Fridays 10am to 4pm.
