The annual Apprenticeship Awareness Challenge at Woodham Academy is set to launch in September this year. Year 9 students at the school work over the course of 9 weeks with one of six local companies to research apprenticeships opportunities in the company and explore career progression routes.
In January 2015, Sarah McGinnety, Associate Assistant Headteacher at the school won the prestigious Northern Echo award for Innovation in Education on the back of the challenge. She said ‘this is an excellent opportunity for young people to explore firsthand the career opportunities that exist in the local area. It is a refreshing change for students to be able to visit companies and liaise with staff on developing a deep understanding of the company.’
This year the school will be working with EBAC Ltd, Gestamp Tallent, The Thorn Academy of Light and Livin. Two more companies are being sought to join the school this year. Interested companies are invited to contact Sarah McGinnety on 01325 300328.
