Just days after the tail end of hurricane Ali made its way across Europe, another Ali blew away the competition at the Newton Aycliffe Rotary Club Charity Golf event on Friday 21st September at Woodham Golf and Country Club.
This Ali was Alison Gent who with her team of ladies, Fiona McGinn, Nikki Dodds and Val Neal playing as the Ravensworth Angels from Ryton Golf Club, swept aside the opposition to claim the first prize with a team score of 97 on a “Stableford Better Ball” format.
It was particularly poignant that Ali should win this on her first entry to the competition that was started in 2003 by her late father, Richard Gent and now Honorary Member Robert Manners. Since then the event has run each year and has now raised in total over £50,000 for Charities
Alongside Rotary Club President, Jon Bean, Ali and her team are pictured receiving the trophy, named after the late David Thompson, who was also a member of the Newton Aycliffe Rotary Club and a keen golfer, from David’s widow Glenys.
This year’s event attracted over 100 entrants and raised in excess of £5000 (including £1000 match funding from Barclays Bank plc) which will be divided between Breast Cancer Now 40%, Prostate Cancer UK 40% and Rotary Charities 20%.
Special thanks were also paid to the ground staff and catering team at the golf club for making the event such a success.
