This year’s Great North Air Ambulance Service awareness week is almost upon us and the charity is calling on supporters to release their inner superhero for the cause.

The annual fundraising drive will see supporters holding events throughout the region in an effort to raise the profile of the charity, which relies on public donations to survive. The week runs from Saturday (September 15th) to September 23rd.

This year’s theme is superheroes, and supporters are being encouraged to hold events with a superhero theme, from quizzes, fancy dress days, mask making, or to summon the courage to take on a challenge such as an adventure trek, bungee jump or sky dive.

The charity is also looking to find a name for its new mascot, a pilot bear, and schools throughout the region are being asked to come up with a suitable moniker for the bear. The winning entry will receive a visit from the mascot.

Kicking off proceedings is a golf day at Penrith Driving Range in Cumbria, starting at 12.20pm on Saturday, September 15th. Entry is £10 per person for the 18 hole tournament, with juniors welcome. Teams of four can enter, but individuals are also being encouraged to get involved. There will be drinks and BBQ available throughout the afternoon. The event is being organised by Amanda Holliday in memory of her father who died last year. To get involved, please call Amanda, who owns Lakeland Music in Penrith, on 01768-864024, or email Amanda@lakelandmusic.uk.com.

The week culminates in a free family fun day at Darlington Rugby Club on Sunday September 23rd. Starting at noon, the event features an It’s a Knockout competition, bouncy castles, face painting and tombola. Refreshments will be available.
